Sambhar Ingredients list

  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Toor Dal – 1 bowl
  • Rai – 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin – 1/2 tsp
  • Onion – 1 big size
  • Tomato – 2 medium size
  • Ginger – 1.5-2 inches
  • Green chili – 1-2
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Red chili powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Asafoetida – 2 pinches
  • Pumpkin – 1 bowl
  • Sambhar masala – 2 tbsp
  • water – by volume
  • salt – as per taste
  • for tadka
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Rai – 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 6 to 7
  • Dry red chili – 3-4
  • Green chili – 3-4
  • Drumstick pods – 7-8 pieces
  • Kashmiri red chili – 1 tsp
  • Tamarind water – 1/2 cup
  • Jaggery – 1 tbsp
  • fresh chopped coriander

Step by step process to make sambhar recipe

To make sambar, first wash the tur dal well and keep it for soaking for an hour. Soak the dal beforehand.

Now we will put a cooker on the gas and put 2 spoons of oil in it.

As soon as the oil becomes slightly hot, we will add one spoon of mustard and one spoon of cumin.

Next will add a chopped onion and fry for a few seconds, you do not have to cook the onion very much.

Now further add chopped tomatoes, grated ginger, 1 to 2 chopped green chillies and mix everything well.

Now we will add turmeric powder, salt as per taste and red chili powder and mix it well with the help of a ladle.

Now we will add asafoetida water and again mix everything while stirring.

Next will add chopped pumpkin and carrot and cook for 1 minute while stirring well.

Now we will add sambar masala and mix it with everything.

Now we will add our washed toor dal and mix everything and cook for 2 to 3 minutes.

If you add water further, you can increase or decrease water according to the consistency of sambhar you want.

After adding water, put the whistle of the cooker and let it come for 2 whistles on high flame.

As soon as 2 whistles slow down the gas flame and let it cook for 5 to 7 minutes.
Till then prepare the tempering of Sambhar.
To prepare the tempering, we will take a pan, you should take the pan a little deep so that the entire sambar gets adjusted.

When the pan becomes hot, we will put 2 tbsp oil in the pan.

Now we will add some mustard seeds, curry leaves, dry red chilies and mix it.

Now we will add boiled drumstick, if you want, you can cook drumstick with lentils and other vegetables in the cooker.

Because my drumstick was soft and fresh, I peeled it and boiled it for a while. Slow down the gas flame.
Now we will add some sambhar masala, some kashmiri red chili powder and mix.

Now we will add tamarind water and a little jaggery, mix all the things and cook for 2 minutes.

After 7 minutes, open the lid of the cooker and stir the dal once.

Now we will turn the dal mixture in the tempering.

Mix everything while stirring and cook till it comes to a boil.
Will add chopped green coriander in the last.
